The region of Abruzzo is located in the southern central part of the Italian peninsula. Most of its territory is mountainous and about one fourth of it is made up of hills, and on the eastern side it confines with the Adriatic Sea.
The highest point of the Appenine group, the Gran Sasso d'Italia (2.914m.), is located in Abruzzo. The capital city of the region is L'Aquila and other provinces are Pescara, Chieti and Teramo.
The main tourist resorts on the Abruzzo coast are: Francavilla al mare, Giulianova, Montesilvano Marina, Ortona, Pineto, Pescara, Roseto degli Abruzzi, Silvi Marina, Tortoreto, Vasto.
There are many farm holiday structures and similar businesses in this region, compensating for the scarce income from agriculture and providing with extra tourist services.
We must mention the presence of the historic National Park of Abruzzo and the other three parks: the National Park of the Maiella, the National Park of the Gran Sasso and Mounts of the Laga and the Regional Park Sirente Velino.
Industry in Abruzzo is mainly present with small and medium industries developed mostly on the coast. In the Avezzano area there are important sugar industries and tourism is becoming of increasing interest especially in the coast areas thanks to the sea and in the mountain areas for winter holidays.
Service industries or agencies in Abruzzo work mostly on the diffusion and promotion of the territory of Abruzzo, especially on the areas of the parks, organizing trips and managing the tourist services with escorts and guides.
Agriculture in this area is not very productive due to the conformation of the territory, whereas ovine breeding, which was a very important source of income in the past, is still active.
There is also bee-keeping. Typical products of Abruzzo are saffron of this area, typical Navelli production, Truffle in its various species, goat cheese and some vegetables such as carrots and potatoes in the Avezzano area. Fishing is an important activity for this region.
