Informations about communications in Italy.
With the word Communications, we intend all those services, apparels and technologies used for communication, therefore we are speaking about television, phones, radio transmissions, postal services and internet.
Television in Italy.
The first experimental broadcasts of Italian television began in 1934, but broadcasts as a regular service began with RAI on January 3rd 1954. Just two years later the signal could be received on the whole national territory, although there were a limited number of people subscribed because of the high costs of televisions. Since then the diffusion of television has grown at incredible rates and at the moment there are many TVs in every home.
There are various programmes on TV, besides those of the RAI (first, second and third channels), there are private channels such as Retequattro, Canale 5 and Italia Uno which are part of the Mediaset group, moreover there is La7, and other minor regional channels. As far as television devices, technology has developed very much, beginning from the old black and white ones to those in colour introduced in Italy in 1977, to the more modern plasma televisions, introduced in 1997, up to digital broadcasting started on Jan. 3rd 2004 and digital terrestrial in 2005.
Telephones in Italy.
Since the invention of Antonio Meucci, who built the first "teletrofono" in 1860, a lot of time has gone by, technology has developed just like the devices used to communicate. The invention of the telephone is surely one of the most useful inventions created by man's genius and it definitely one of the most used inventions, both as a home phone and as a mobile one. At the moment in our country there are several companies which offer home and mobile telephone services, the most active ones are: Albacom, Fastweb, H3G,(with the brand "Tre") Tele2, Telecom Italia, TIM,(mobile phone company) Tiscali, Vodafone IT, (mobile phone company) Wind, (also a mobile phone company).

Internet, the world net data transmission, has its origins in the 60s as a military project of the American Defence Department. It was later given to civil companies to use during the first years of the 90s, first connecting the most important university centres and later entering everyone's homes.
