Friuli Venezia Giulia has its origins from the union
between the two regions of Friuli and Venezia Giulia.
It is located in
the north-east of the Italian peninsula and its territory is divided in
about 40% mountains and about 40% plains, the rest are hills. On the
southern side it looks over the Adriatic Sea; the capital city of the
region is Trieste and the other provinces are Gorizia, Pordenone and
Udine.

The tourist sector in Friuli Venezia Giulia is important and it is ever-increasing, thanks to the mountain and coast areas on the Adriatic Sea such as Lignano Sabbiadoro. Trieste, with its Miramare Castle, should be visited, just like Udine, where some of the best works of art of the great Italian painter of the 700s, Tiepolo, are kept. Tarvisio is one of the most equipped winter resorts of Friuli.
Industry is also quite present, prevalently with small and medium businesses which operate mostly in the mechanical, food, metallurgic, wood and furniture sectors.
It is quite easy to imagine that agriculture is
better developed in the southern areas of the region since in the
northern part, being predominantly mountainous, pasture and forests
prevail.
There are chiefly tobacco and sugar beet crops, although there are also
those for mulberries and food for silkworms, used to make precious silks.
Fruit and cereal crops are also important, in addition to grapes used to
produce important wines of the Friuli region. The hills on the eastern
side of Friuli, called Colli Orientali, are the perfect location for
important vineyards of excellent wines such as the Aquileia doc, Müller
Thurgau, Pinot and the Traminer.
