The Marches are located in the central eastern part of the Italian
peninsula.
The territory is crossed by the Umbro-Marchigiano Apennine of the regions of Umbria and Marche) and it is mainly hilly with small
portions of plains which correspond with the coast areas.
The Marche confine on the northern side with the Republic of San Marino and the region of Emilia Romagna, and on the southern side with Lazio and Abruzzo, whereas on the western side it confines with the regions of Toscana and Umbria and on the eastern side with the Adriatic Sea. The capital city of the region is Ancona and other major cities are Ascoli Piceno, Fano and Pesaro. The provinces of the Marche are: Ancona - Ascoli Piceno - Macerata - Pesaro.

Being developed mainly on the coastal areas, tourism is well present in the Marches. This region offers a good assortment of hotels and inns mostly visited during the summer months both by Italian and foreign tourists who enjoy their holidays in close proximity to the many beaches. The most famous and equipped beach resorts are those of Conero, Porto San Giorgio, Gabicce, Grottammare and Senigallia, all provided with modern and efficient equipment and infrastructures.
In the last few years the Marches have a had a good industrial development, the implants are mostly located around the coast and they are prevalently naval and refinery industries. There are also some chemical industries in Ancona and Civitanova. The smaller businesses are situated throughout the whole region. On a national level the most important trades are shoes and fishing, which is practiced with large ships and modern equipment.
Agriculture is well present in this region with fruit, olive, wheat, wine grapes and vegetable crops. In the internal areas agriculture is still poor and anchored to rural traditions, not representing a good source of income. This is the reason why several inhabitants of the inner areas have moved, throughout the years, towards the coast areas where it is easier to find jobs with a better income in the tourist industry.
