Grosseto is a provincial capital in the Tuscany region, located near the sea and in the heart of Maremma, in the middle of a plain to the right of the Ombrone river, just before this flows into the Thyrrenian Sea. Unlike other places in southern Tuscany, its origins do not go back to Etruscan times, but to the Middle Ages. For a long time, the city and a vast area in Maremma were under the control of the Aldobrandeschi family.
In 1151 Grosseto swore loyalty to Siena, and after some attempts of rising against this city, in 1244, Siena established again the oath of alliance and substitued the Aldobrandeschi. After other series of attempts of rebellion, Siena subjugated Grosseto definitely in 1336. The following period was characterized by several battles and pestilences, and after the treatise of Cateau Cambrésis the Spaniards were driven away and the city fell under the control of Florence.

Under the dominion of Florence, Grosseto flourished again: there was an economic recovery, new public buildings were constructed and great fortification work was done. It is of this period, in fact, the building of the hexagonal encircling walls, whose exterior part was surrounded by a ditch. There were two main gates: Porta Nuova and Porta Reale. The walls are used now as public walk and park. In the following years important lands reclamations were made too.
The main monument of Grosseto is the Cathedral, entitled to San Lorenzo, the patron of the city. It is a gothic style church, whose building was interrupted several times, due to the wars with Siena. Among the most interesting monuments to see in Grosseto, there are the church of San Francesco and, near to it, the bell tower, recently restored. Inside the church there are many works of art: a Crucifix attributed to Duccio di Boninsegna and numerous other frescos and paintings.
Another interesting place to visit is the former Clarisse convent, dating back to the Middle Ages, which now houses the museumlab of Grosseto. The church of San Pietro is the most ancient in the city. Out of the city, there are several monasteries as for example the Abbey of San Rabano, located in the Uccellina park, and the Chapel of Santa Maria a Grancia, near to the Ombrone river.
To finish with, other places which are worth visiting are the Civic Museum of Natural History, the town Acquarium and the museumlab. Grosseto offers a wide selection of hotel and agriturismi accomodations, either by the sea or in the countryside.
