Informations about Lucca.

Lucca is a provincial capital in Tuscany. It is a stanning medioeval city near the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano. Its origins dates back to Paleolithic times. Lucca was first a Ligurian city, after a Roman colony, in VI century, and the capital of Longobard reign until IX century. When in 1162 it became a free Comune, the city knew a new era of splendour and riches, thanks to its bankers and to the manufacturing activities and despite the continuous strugglers between Guelfi and Ghibellini and although the numerous wars with Pisa and Florence. Many beautiful buildings and towers are still today a sign of the richness Lucca enjoyed during these centuries. With the exception of short periods, the city remained an independent republic until the end of XVIII century, when it was taken over by Napoleon. Successively, it was attached to Tuscany and finally became part of the Italian State in 1860.

Lucca to visit, churches and works of art

Lucca is among the most important cities of art in Italy, and it is known all over the world for its extraordinary historical, architectural and artistic relevance. It is the city of “a hundred churches” that has preserved intact the ancient charm of its streets, squares, buildings and towers. Rich in history, its old-town centre is surrounded by a circle of walls. Dating back to XVI-XVII centuries, the walls, which were erected for defensive reasons, have remained intact through the centuries and represent nowadays one of the main tourist attractions. Along the top of them there is a wide road, long about 4.200 meters, on which is possible to walk shaded by chestnut trees.

To enter the old town it is necessary to pass underneath the walls through the gates, that are eight: Porta Santa Maria, Porta Elisa, Porta San Donato, Porta Sant’Anna, Porta San Pietro, Porta San Jacopo and Porta San Gervasio and Protasio. In the old part of Lucca, visitors enjoy an historical atmosphere, walking through the old streets, the ancient palaces and the astonishing churches. Among the monuments, the cathedral of San Martino is one of the most important; it houses a patrimony of inestimable historical and artistic value, as “L’ultima Cena” (The Last Supper of Jesus) by Jacopo Tintoretto and the great Sarcophagus, a masterpiece by Jacopo della Quercia.

In one of the main squares of Lucca, Piazza San Michele, there is the Church of San Michele in Foro, an example of Pisan-Luccan architecture. Other beautiful churches to visit are the church of Santi Giovanni and Reparata and the church of San Pietro Somaldi. In Lucca, there are also many interesting renaissance palaces, such as Palazzo Mansi, which houses the Lucca’s National Picture Gallery as well as occasional special exhibitions, Palazzo Ducale, Palazzo Pfanner and the Clock Tower.

Also the beautiful villas and gardens of the Lucca hills, built from rich and aristocratic families, have become a major attraction for visitors: the most important is Villa Mansi. To finish with, worth of note are the Piazza Anfiteatro (Piazza of the Amphitheatre), built on the site of an original Roman amphitheatre, and The Orto Botanico Comunale di Lucca, a botanic garden dating from 1820.
