Informations about Pisa

Pisa is a province in Tuscany, with an area of 2.444 square kilometers and around 380.00 inhabitants.

Its territory stretches from the Arno river bacin to the Liguria sea, with a coastline of about 15 km where the towns of Tirrenia, Marina di Pisa and Calabrone are situated.

This wonderful part of Tuscany is framed to the north by the Italian Appennine mountains and to the south by splendid hilly landscapes and two valleys, Valdera and Alta Val di Cecina, where the famous old city of Volterra is located. Pisa rises on the banks of Arno river.

Tourism in Pisa

Pisa medioeval past, expressed in its monuments, buildings and piazzas, is a fascinating attraction for tourists.

The most important monuments are the Cathedral, the Baptistry and, in particular, the Leaning Tower, famous all over the world. Church of Santa Maria della Spina and church of San Paolo a Ripa merit attention too.

The main historical events take place every year. The Luminaria of Saint Ranieri, on the night of the 16th of June, is the most evocative.

On the occasion of the celebration of Pisa patron saint, Saint Ranieri, almost seventy thousand wax candles are set in glasses around the outlines of the buildings, the bridges and the churches along the river Arno. The lights of the candles make the atmosphere magic.

Events in Pisa

Besides the Luminaria, there is the "Regatta of the Maritime Republics", a rowing competition preceded by a great parade which evoke the main events of these four ancient maritime cities (Pisa, Venice, Amalfi and Genoa).

To finish with, is to remember other two important events: The “Gioco del Ponte" and "The Regatta of Saint Ranieri".

Pisa has a perfect tourist receptiveness, and worthy of note are the agriturismi in the surrounding countryside. In all restaurants a wide range of food (from meat to fish) and delicious tuscan wine is provided.

History of Pisa

Pisa decline began in the XIII century A.D. as a result of contrasts and battles against Lucca, Florence and, especially, Genoa, its greatest economic rival. Pisa origins are not precisely known, probably dating back to the VII century B.C. In the VI century B.C. it was an Etruscan village.

Under the dominion of Etruschis it gained a prominent commercial role, especially in the trade of metals, iron, pond and bronze.

It also acquired a leading position in politics and art. In the III century B.C. Pisa became a Roman colony, keeping its dominant position. But it was during the Middle Ages, precisely in the XI and XII centuries, that the city enjoyed its period of major development.

Thanks to a powerful merchant fleet and navy, it extended its trading in the Mediterranean area and was protagonist of a large offensive against the Saracens.

Successively, the Crusades helped Pisa have more lucrative trading opportunities, in particular developing the import of precious materials from the coastal cities of the Middle East.

Are of this period: the urban structure, the piazzas as well as the architecture of buildings and churches.
