Informations and news about Siena.

Surrounded by hills and framed by the Arbia, Merse and Elsa rivers, Siena is a province of Tuscany region. The city was founded by the Etruscans and, successively, became a Romany colony known as Saena Julia. The first document dealing with Siena dates back to 70 a.D., it is the Tacito’s Historiea. We do not have any information regarding the middle age period; we only know about the war between the bishops of Siena and Arezzo dealing with territorial border, which ended with the victory of the bishop of Arezzo. The Lombard kings governed until the VIII century, when they were defeated by Charles Magnus. In the following centuries Siena became an important town. The city had a great economical and political development; and the increasing of its territory caused an inevitable confrontation with Florence.

Siena. historical curiosity

Siena was a vital city: it became an important banking center that attracted many people asking loans, and enjoyed the support of the State of the Church. As a result of such an economic development, confrontations with Florence were inevitable. Siena, which sided with the Ghibellins, fought against Guelphs supported by Florence, but being unable to compete with its rival in 1555 the city was conquered by Florence, losing its autonomy. Siena is small; it is built in a circle around the main square Piazza del Campo, which is one of the most beautiful medieval squares in Italy and Europe. Piazza del Campo was initially intended as a marketplace and only in 1288 became the heart and soul of the city.

Monuments and historical buildings in Siena.

In Piazza del Campo there is the Palazzo Comunale, a building which has contributed enormously to the square importance. Formerly, in fact, the Palazzo Comunale was the residence of the republican government, consisting of the Podestà and Council of Nove, who brought notoriety to the city.

The square, which has a unique shell shape, attracts many tourists, who are fascinated by the beauty of the city. Another important monument is the Torre del Mangia (Mangia tower), a symbol of the city. The tower, built in 1325-1348, overlooks the square and is adjacent to Palazzo Comunale. It was called by this name from its first guardian, who was nicknamed “Mangiaguadagni” for his tendency to use all his money for food. With its height of 102 m, it is one of the tallest towers in Italy. A clock to the tower was added successively.

Among its monuments, there are: Palazzo Tolomeo and the Arcibishop’s Palace. Among the churches: the Duomo, the church of the Osservanza and the Synagogue. Siena is also famous for the University and for the Palio, a horse race. The “contrade” in which the city is divided take part in this medieval competition, which takes places every year on July 2nd and August 16th.
