Spoleto history, art and culture

Spoleto is a culturally rich city in the Umbria region located within a two hour train or car journey from Rome. It is 20 km (12 mi) S. of Trevi, 63 km (39 miles) SE of Perugia; 212 km (131 miles) SE of Florence; and 126 km (78 miles) N of Rome.

This cathedral was constructed mainly in the 12th century and is set against a magnificent backdrop of hills and valleys.

Spoleto is a remarkable location and an attractive holiday destination to visit at any time of the year. It is well known for its music festivals, especially the Festivale dei Due Mondi in the summertime.

 

Otherwise, it is a very peaceful and pleasant place to walk around, and you can use Spoleto as a base to drive through beautiful Umbrian countryside and mountains and to visit other Umbrian cities.

Festival dei due mondi in Spoleto

The Festival dei Due Mondi is an annual arts festival that attracts big name stars from the arts world. The programme normally comprises a mixture of cinema, visual arts, classic and modern music, opera, ballet and modern dance.

The venues used during the festival make use of Spoleto's attractions with events being held around the Duomo, in the Roman Theatre and at various churches and theatres. During Festival time accommodation in Spoleto will be virtually impossible as most places will be booked in advance.

 

There are many areas of Spoleto that offer vacation rentals or self-catering apartments at affordable prices.

 

Obviously, demand for apartment rentals in Soleto will fluctuate throughout the year and pricing may also be subject to change.

 

Another attraction in Spoleto is the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale, formed in 1947 by Adriano Belli, is a competition where new and upcoming opera students get a chance to showcase their talent.

 

Overall, whatever time of the year it is, Spoleto is an attractive location for families, for arts enthusiasts and for a relaxing cultural vacation.
